I just watched the episode a second time. The writing was hilarious, I stand by that. But I did notice on repeat viewing that the main gang took a backseat to the guest stars. And Kaitlin Olsen & Michaela Watkins are just too good not to love. But Nick…ugh. I’m afraid we are…

And this season has been a delight so far: great writing and delivery and a nice emphasis on the interpersonal dynamics and contrasts that are at the heart of the show. And hopefully I’m not alone. :) I’ve liked all three episodes. I can’t wait to see what’s…

I think it’s just a matter of balance at the moment. He’s always had his gross, irresponsible moments but it was balanced out by a certain normalcy, that made him seem like a human being instead of a cartoon. (I think “The Last Wedding” got the balance just about right, he was funny and ridiculous but also real.) Nick got a lot funnier and weirder in S2 without becoming overly dumb, so it can be done. He has a ton of other humourous character traits for them to draw on.

(FWIW, I thought “The Box” was in character, too.)

I have been skeptical so far this season. Eps 1 & 2 left me with lukewarm feelings. This episode was SO well written by Nina Pedrad. Keep that girl around! Hilarious lines throughout the entire episode. The first time in so long that I have wanted to immediately rewatch an episode to catch lines I…

Hmm, that’s quite a rave…maybe I need to rewatch and give it another chance, lol.

Well, I guess I made the right choice not to watch this season…..

Q: Do you think it’s time to revisit Picket Fences?
A: I really wish we could do a Picket Fences reunion movie. I would love to revisit Max, the character I played. I adored her.

Anonymous said: This fandom sounds like a broken record. It's like, 2/3 of everyone here can't stop complaining about the fact that Nick and Jess are not interacting much so far (if not at all). But for me it's completely comprehensible why the writers are doing this. On every scene of them together there's always this spark, and this undeniable chemistry, and now also this angsty sexual tension of the post break up, and since the writers are too lazy to deal with that, they decided to simply avoid it.

tuxedos-are-not-suits:

Not really sure if that’s the answer either, though.  It’s going to just turn more and more people away.  But I agree that it’s definitely a result of their laziness as writers.  I wonder more and more if S2 was just sheer luck.  Somehow the stars aligned when they were writing and shooting that season, and it’s going to haunt them for the rest of the series.  Until they decide to buckle down and make these characters grown up and move on, I don’t think they have a shot at recapturing that magic.

Then again, maybe they don’t want to?  Keeping momentum like that going is hard and takes a lot of work and planning of character arcs and growth.  Maybe they really DO just want to be funny………..

Wasn’t there an interview where the writers said the studio had warned them the audience would want the characters to grow up and change, and to avoid the temptation? Something like that.

Anyway, one of the recent articles said there’d be a lot of growing up this season, so I’m sure we can expect some forward movement there. (So far I’ve found it all pretty true to life though, there are plenty of over 30s who aren’t remotely close to figuring out any of their shit *points to self*)

Anonymous said: I know people get defensive about Zooey but if we're speaking strictly of acting choices then what's the harm, right? One thing is reflecting character development in the choices she makes, but that's not it. Not me for me at least. I see her playing Jess very differently each season. It honestly trips me up when I marathon the show. I don't get it. I personally didn't mind the weirdo from season 1, but I think we can all agree that season 2 was probably the best for her. It's frustrating.

tuxedos-are-not-suits:

Season 2 had some sort of magic component to it that I just don’t think anyone will ever fully understand.  LMAO!!!  I agree that she hasn’t played Jess consistently from one season to the next, but I’m not sure if it’s a reflection on Zooey or the writers.  In all fairness, NONE of the characters have really been written consistently throughout the series.  The last 1/3 of S1 through the end of S2 was probably the most consistent run of the series, with that back half of S2 obviously just NAILING all the dynamics to perfection.

I don’t think anyone involved with the show goes back and rewatches the old episodes as much as we do…:)
